Boney Fields in concert

by Mahes Perera

Boney Fields

Critics worldwide hail the music of trumpeter/vocalist Boney Fields as 'a musical spectrum so wide, it goes from blues to funk, from world music to rock, and from rhythm and blues to jazz without even hearing the difference......'

And Boney Fields will be in Sri Lanka to perform at a fund raiser concert with his bassist from Mauritus Mike Armoogum and drummer from Italy, Enrico Mattioli. They will be joined by Glen Terry - guitar/vocals and Sri Lankan pianist Kumar de Silva. The concert will be held on Friday March 3, at the Barefoot Gallery 7.00 pm.

Boney Fields who started learning drums when he was 12 years old had to switch to the trumpet because the college band needed a trumpeter. Over the years his influences have been James Brown, Earth Wind and Fire and Bootsy Collins on the funk side, as well as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown on the jazz end.

When he turned professional, he toured with several musicians introducing that 'made in Chicago' style to the overall sound of the bands.

Through his many performers with master musicians, Boney Fields has created his own sound of the blues, which makes the music lover have a whale of a time. Make sure you make the date.

Whither Paradise?

The new-look lifestyle journal LIVING makes the case for rejuvenating Sri Lanka's listless tourism industry, with a comprehensive cover story featuring three prominent personalities from the hospitality sector.

"We need to find out what suits Sri Lanka, understand it and tailor-make 'world-class' for us. We must map out a plan and execute it. We have to make sure that whatever we do, we should be - and do - the best," avers Rohan Karr, Chief Executive Officer - Cinnamon Hotels And Resorts and Executive Vice-President - John Keells Holdings (JKH).

Shiromal Cooray, Managing Director - Jetwing Travels is emphatic that a lot more needs to be done: "Upping service levels is a must - because at present, we cannot attract good people into the industry... we must become professional in our outlook, because customer expectations are higher and much more discerning," she asserts in LIVING.

Abbas Esufally, Group Director - Hemas Holdings, believes that Sri Lanka still remains an unknown destination in certain regions: "We haven't moved with the time. ... Tourism can be the driver of the national economy. It's ideally suited to our country, because it offers extensive employment opportunities - and thereby empowers people from all walks of life," he tells LIVING.
