'Epidemic' of renal failures in North and East

The Water Resources Board (WRB) awaits funds to conduct a research on ground water contamination, reported to be one of the main causes of renal failure among people in the North and East.

According to health authorities, low quality utensils like pots and kettles made out of metal, sold in the market, is another cause for the alarming number of persons with renal failure.

"There are requests to carry out a research on ground water in the north but we lack money", said WRB General Manager R. N. Karunaratne. Some medical studies also proved that low quality metal products when mixed with contaminated water causes renal failure.

Meanwhile, Consultant Physician of the Jaffna Teaching Hospital Dr. T. Peranantharaja told the 'Sunday Observer' that there was a marked increase in renal failure cases reported. Over 60 people with chronic renal failure were treated last year and 10 new kidney patients have been admitted to the hospital over the past two months.

According to Dr. Peranantharaja, these patients were mainly from agricultural areas like the Vanni.

"Major causes for the increasing number of renal failure cases in the North is the usage of poor quality utensils, pesticide and the high levels of chemicals in ground water", he said.

He also said some patients with renal faliure suffer from chronic glomerulo nephiritis, which is an immune complex disorder. " The symptoms are loss of appetite, lose of weight and anaemia", he added. (SS)
