Power ministry flexes muscles

by Shanika Sriyananda

Power and Energy Ministry have decided to take tough legal measures against power pirates. The present fine for piracy will also be increased by 50 per cent.

Due to alarming number of cases, the Special Flying Squad of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has been strengthened to conduct raids islandwide. Minister John Seneviratne has instructed the CEB General Manager Ranjith Fonseka to allocate 10 vehicles to the Squad.

The CEB has a debt of over Rs. 100 billion mainly due high dependency on oil based power generation. According to Minister Seneviratne, if the CEB financial crisis continues, an efficient power supply would be affected.

Meanwhile, the CEB recovered Rs. 15 million from power piracy during the past three months.

The Ministry requests public help and call 2384837 or 2681273 to report on pirates.
