JSC Secretary denies press report By M. P. Muttiah Judicial Service Commission's Secretary P. W. De Jayatillake categorically denied a press report that there was a delay in providing minutes of the JSC meetings to the members and it was one of the reasons for the withdrawal of two members of the Commission. The Secretary said that minutes were distributed on the following day of the meeting. Neither of the Commission members had ever raised this issue at the meeting. He said the Commission's functions were in accordance with the JSC rules and policies. Jayatilleke said that at the last JSC meeting held on January 26 and a decision was taken to appoint 10 Magistrates, 5 Labour Tribunal Presidents and 27 Grade 3 Court Registrars. The Commission sent letters of appointment on January 28 and they assumed duties on February 1. Jayatilleke speaking at a meeting of Court Registrars held in Colombo on Feb. 11 dispelled fears that the resignation of two members of the Commission had any effect on the smooth functioning of the judicial system countrywide. He alleged that some sections instilled fears in the minds of the people that there would be a breakdown in the judicial service following the resignation of the two members. He commended the Registrars and others for upholding the dignity of their
profession and conducting the affairs of the judiciary smoothly. |
