Salary increase: 45 per cent for top officials

by Ananda Kannangara

The Public Service Trade Union Federation (PSTUF) on Friday

proposed a 45 per cent salary increase for top public officials including doctors, with 20 per cent salary increase for over one million public servants in other sectors.

The PSTUF submitted this proposal to the National Council for Administration (NCA) following a request by President Mahinda Rajapakse at a meeting held in Colombo last week.

In an interview with the Sunday Observer, PSTUF President

W.H. Piyadasa said that President Rajapakse was compelled to summon number of top public sector officials including several members of the GMOA and a group of leading trade unionists, following an islandwide strike, launched by doctors which crippled the country's entire health sector for nearly three weeks.

This trade union action was launched by the GMOA over the cancellation of the Public Administration salary circular No. 1/2006 which gave the doctors a enhanced wage hike.

The doctors' strike badly affected the functions of all hospitals.

Citing the Tissa Devendra salary structure where doctors were granted a 65 per cent salary increase, the PSTUF warned the NCA not to implement that recommendation as it may lead do another agitation campaign by one million public servants in other categories.

Piyadasa pointed out that at present Government doctors received an extra allowance in addition to their monthly salary and a vehicle permit to purchase a duty free vehicle. According to Piyadasa, Ministry Secretaries too enjoy the privilege of an additional allowance in addition to an official bungalow. He said there was no Government restriction for doctors to make an additional income through channelled services.
