Shehan, Buddhika save Thurstan from defeat

By Ranjan Anandappa

Shehan Perera (107 n.o) and Buddhika Samarawickrema (67 n.o) staved off a possible Thurstan defeat as they engaged themselves in an unbeaten match saving fifth wicket stand of 173 in their annual 43rd cricket encounter against Isipathana which ended in a draw at the SSC grounds yesterday.

Thurstan were in dire straits when they lost four wickets for 64 runs in their second innings batting with a defecit of 122 runs when Isipathana scored 267 for 8 declared in reply to Thurstan's first innings score of 145.

Isipathana had 78 overs to bowl their rivals out below 122 runs. They did well to get 4 for 64 ,but Perera and Samarawickrema produced one of their best batting performances for the season to frustrate the Isipathanians. Isuru Vindana their skipper switched his bowlers in a desperate attempt to get the break through, but the fifth wicket pair of Thiurstan gave an object lesson how to bat sensibly and save matches on a wicket which did not give any assistance to the bowlers.

Perera joined by Samarawickrema , batted with grit and application to bring the score from 64 for 4 to 237 for 4 when bad light intervened with more than ten mandatory overs left to be bowled.

The partnership between Shehan Perera and Samarawickrema created a new Big Match record for the fifth wicket between the two schools when they broke the previous best by Sudara Jayawardena ( 67) and Chamara Liyanage ( 59) in 1997.

In reply to Thurstan's first innings score of 145, Isipathana who were 157 for 3 overnight went on to make a healthy 267 for 8 declared with a useful lead of 122 runs.

Isipathana were able to reach their score mainly due to a 100 run fourth wicket stand between Lakshan Samarasena ( 81) with ten fours facing 120 deliveries and Gamindu Kanishka (55) with nine fours.
