'Difference' is the name of the game

by Umangi de MEL

'DIFFERENCE' these days is like the name of the game. Nobody wants to play second fiddle but the best. People have felt the urge to come out of the so-called frames and live a little. 'Virtuoso', a 'different' dance show organised by a few young but immensely talented folks will be held at the Bishop's Auditorium on March 13, at 7.30 p.m.

"We are bringing together a few bands, lots of dance acts, hip hop, cultural including street dance for the first time in Sri Lanka. The bands include Tantrum, Sylph and Burn out while the 'Soul Shakers' and 'La Trois' will take care of the dance acts," says 14-year-old Mahie Sumathipala together with 17-year-old Shabeer Rizvi who's backed the former to organise the event and make her dream come true.

"Well, the show was Mahie's dream. Myself and another guy called Vidura Samarakkodi are helping her with it. The proceeds will go to the forum for research and development which his created a research culture in Sri Lanka getting down doctors from all over the world to do research for the first time.

They also prepare magazines for local A/L students." According to the two of them, the show will be way different from other shows which have been staged so far by many other people and places. Ensuring the uniqueness of it, they say even the hall will be decorated in a way that could rouse the audience.

"Special lights, sound effects and the show will be opened by three violinists accompanied by piano music. Even the stage acts differ as they are based on emotions like love and hate. The bands will go acoustic and they will also play punk rock," Shabeer says.

Having a cast of 44, the guys have been practising for two months.

Although they have taken care of major tasks like creating me dance routines and convincing a few tycoons in the field to sponsor these event, the busy organisers are merely kids and will be for a good couple of years, "All the participants are 13 to 18.

We've had a lot of plans and all of it has worked out. We've been working pretty hard to achieve our target. The practise sessions after school have been tiring as ever but it was fun.

The most important thing is the experience we've gathered and what we've learnt in the process of organising a big show like this. It was nice being able to convince people at Odel, MTV, Singer, SLT and World Link.

"At first, it was just the two of us. But eventually the news was spread and we got loads of kids wanting to join not only from our own schools but other schools as well. It was a nice experience meeting each other's friends. Now it's not only the two of us any more but all of us."

Trying to balance both studies and practise sessions, Mahie says she's quite successful in doing so.

"The tickets will be priced at Rs. 250, Rs. 300 and Rs. 500 and will be sold at the gate. Two DVD's will be recorded that night and will be out for sale. "We took it very easy at the beginning but now it's a totally different picture. We've matured and learnt a lot about life and hope it'll help us make the show a real good one."
