Reviving memories

'Timepieces'

A photography exhibition by Menika van der Poorten which will coincide with International Women's Day will be held from March 17 to 19 at the Lional Wendt Art Gallery, Colombo.

The photographs reflect a personal snapshot journey of Menika's life over a period of many years. According to Menika her memory is interwoven with glimpses of other peoples lives and stories, criss-crossing back and forth through a myriad memories and pathways.

"Photographs capture, reflect and revive the memory, but it could also (re)create memory; real and imagined. For me these images are like keys that unlock sudden, hidden areas of my memory," feels Menike.

Menika has been involved in photography both in England and Sri Lanka for over 20 years is attached to the Vibhavi Academy of Fine arts as a photography lecturer.

She combines photography with parenting, freelance arts co-ordinating, research and editing. Menika's work is mainly about memory, identify passage of time, private spaces and stories reflecting her personal history of being from two disappearing communities; Feudal Sabaragamuwa and the Plantation Eurasians.
