Rs. 1,800 million for road development

By M. P. Muttiah

President Mahinda Rajapakse will inaugurate the second phase of the Maganeguma project on March 19 in Nuwara Eliya.

Simultaneously 170 road development projects will commence islandwide. The government has allocated 1,800 million rupees for this project.

Each Parliamentarian and Provincial Councillor will be allocated 2.5 million rupees. They will select the roads that are to be developed. Out of a 100,000 km road network in the country, 65,000 km of the roads are in rural areas. The responsibility of maintaining these roads was handed over to the provincial councils, but they were not managed due to financial constraints.

Improving the rural roads is an urgent need to develop rural economy, transportation of products to markets and urban areas, linking the rural community with various economic, social and educational services are some of the benefits that would be reaped through this project.

When President Mahinda Rajapakse was the Minister of Highways, he initiated this project in 2004. During that year 600 km roads were developed and it doubled in 2005.

During this year 2,000 km of roads will be developed.
