Vehicle identification streamlined by Anura Maitipe A specific identification system will be introduced for different categories of vehicles shortly to trace vehicles in the event of theft, irregular transfer or accidents, a spokesman for Department of Registration of Motor Vehicles told the Sunday Observer. He said, "the existing system is a bit confused because all categories of vehicles such as cars, lorries, trucks, buses, vans, three-wheelers and motor bikes bear the same letters and the numbers." This has created confusion when tracing vehicles following theft, irregular transfer or an accidents. He said at a glance, the category of the vehicle could not be identified by its number whether it was a bus, lorry or some other vehicle. As a result following an accident, theft or irregular transfer it takes a long time to trace the category of vehicle. This has resulted an undue delay in court cases. Under the new system a specific identification would be given for a particular group of vehicles. For instance numbers that begin with the letter 'K' would be given only for cars. Letter 'L' would be given for heavy vehicles, Accordingly each category would be given a specific letter and this would avoid confusion. In addition to this letter 'D' would be marked on number plates of diesel vehicles and 'P' for petrol vehicles.
