No more music in buses

by Ananda Kannangara

Colombo Traffic Police Director SSP Lucky Peiris expressed concern over sound pollution inside buses and added that present laws did not permit them to ban radio music inside buses.

Speaking to the 'Sunday Observer', SSP Peiris said that prohibiting radio music inside buses was a matter for the National Transport Commission.

"However if a passenger makes a complaint of such inconvenience by sound pollution inside buses, Police could investigate and take legal action against drivers," he said.

When contacted National Transport Commission (NTC), Acting Director General M.A Jeffry said there were no laws to ban sound pollution inside buses caused by radio music.

"If a national policy on noise pollution is formulated by the Environmental Ministry, it will immensely help to resolve this matter," he said.

At the same time he said that they had received complaints in this connection from commuters.

"We have warned bus owners as music could divert attention of drivers heading to accidents ," he added.

He said a survey to measure the volume releases from speakers inside buses was carried out recently with the help of officials in the Motor Traffic Department and the Environmental Authority.

"Even in foreign countries this nature of noise pollution in public transport has been completely banned and legal action taken against car and van drivers who enjoy music while driving," he noted.
