St. Joseph's 104th Prize giving by Sarath Malalasekera "The ethnic conflict has brought in disorder, dis-unity and dissension in our country. This affected the management and discipline in our schools and the consequences were disastrous. We earnestly hope and fervently pray that a lasting peace will dawn on this country as a result of peace talks," said St. Joseph's College Rector Rev. Fr. Sylvester Ranasinghe at the 104th prize giving ceremony held at the College recently. The Chief Guest was Rev. Fr. Ivan Perera. Fr. Ranasinghe further said that "it was indispensable to grasp the urgency of planning education for peace among the primary objectives of our formation offering their specific contribution to encourage in the hearts of the pupils the desire to become peacemakers. Wars are in fact, born in the hearts of the people. The educational process should excite attitudes of peace in the souls of people." The SJC Rector quoting from the United Nations Resolution No. 53/243 of October 6, 1999 which states that "Peace is not only the absence of conflict, but requires a positive, dynamic and participatory process where dialogue is encouraged and conflicts are solved in a spirit of understanding and co-operation." This process should commence in schools giving it the utmost priority."
