ICTA to work on community development Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) has planned to give away Rs. 35 million on several community development projects. The grants would be utilised on selected areas of education, communication and disabilities. The Community Assistance Programme would offer grants directly to communities for implementing ICT related solutions to improve their lifestyle. In the area of education and unemployed, school leavers in two villages in Hambantota and Batticaloa, facilities will be made to teach English via satellite technology. The teaching facilities installed there will eventually be owned by the community. The ICTA has also planned to assist 20 micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (SME) from 20 districts to improves their capacity. On communications, the grant will be given to create a pilot community radio station in a rural area. The proposed radio channel is expected to become a sustainable medium of education and training. The ICTA would transfer the ownership of the radio station to the community.Under the disability grant project, ICTA intends to create digital talking books. The ultimate goal of this project is to include the print disabled
community into the main stream of the society in the spheres of education,
employment, economics, culture and communication. |
