by L. S. A. Wedaarachchi

Singer Sri Lanka Ltd is offering a range of household items on easy payment schemes or cash for the forthcoming festive season.

The Singer sewing machine was introduced to Sri Lanka in 1876 and the Singer brand has a prestigious history of 130 years. Quality household items and consumer electronics at affordable and reasonable prices with efficient after sales service are the noteworthy features of the Singer consumer marketing policy.

Singer Sri Lanka has the largest retail network numbering 280 all over the island including the north and the east. Well equipped after sales and technical centres have been set up islandwide.

Marketing Director of Singer Sri Lanka Asitha Abeysekara told the Sunday Observer that up to the mid-1980's the activities of Singer Sri Lanka had been limited only to Singer sewing machines which have been used from generation to generation in Sri Lankan society. Due to the socio economic changes in the mid 1980's Singer Sri Lanka opened its showrooms for other household items such as refrigerators and consumer electronics, he said.

At present Singer operates seven Singer Megas in Colombo, Nugegoda, Mount Lavinia, Wattala, Rajagiriya, Kandy and Gampaha in addition to its islandwide showrooms and approved dealers. Apart from the Singer brand household items world famous brands such as Hitachi, Samsung and Whirlpool household consumer electronics are freely available providing a wide choice to customers.

Singer Mega shops and showrooms display essential household items and consumer electronics imported from India, China, Malasiya and other reginal countries in addition to the locally made singer sewing machines and Sisil refrigerators. Therefore customers have a wide choice at Singer showrooms, said Sales Director of Singer Sri Lanka N. M. Prakash.

"The main objective of our marketing policy is great convenience to the customers", he said. The Singer manufacturing plant at Ratmalana manufactures 50% of the country's needs of singer sewing machines and Sisil refrigerators.

In 2005 Singer sales growth was dominated by sewing machines, consumer electronics and refrigerators. Sewing machines recorded sales of over 70,000 units in 2005 compared to the previous year.
