IMEXPRO 2006 will boost foreign investment and expand trade

by Lalin Fernandopulle

The inauguration of the Import Export Promotion Fair, IMEXPRO 2006 organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce in association with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka was held on Thursday at the BMICH.'

The IMEXPRO 2006 to be held from March 16-18 is organised with the objective of promoting joint venture opportunities for businesses, trade and investment, interaction among local and foreign buyers and visitors and enable overseas visitors to gain first hand experience and knowledge of products of local entrepreneurs.

The import and export fair is in keeping with the vision of President Mahinda Rajapakse in his election manifesto 'Mahinda Chintanaya' to expand trade and investment outside Colombo to the rural sector.

This would support the local entrepreneur and develop the rural economy, Chairman IMEXPRO 2006, Tilak De Zoysa said.

He said the 300 Factory Program of the Government would be an incentive to the rural masses to play an important role in the development of the national economy.

With the commencement of the peace talks the IMEXPRO 2006 is a timely event paving the way for foreign investment and expanding trade opportunities to the North and East as well, he said.

Chairman Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Deva Rodrigo said IMEXPRO is a memorable event when the Chamber of Commerce started 167 years ago in March the export earning of the country was 260 sterling pounds and today export earnings of Sri Lanka is US $ 6.3 billion.

He said an event of this nature would be important to sustain the economic growth with the promotion of trade and investment. Surpassing the six percent growth rate achieved in the first quarter of this year should be the priority of all, Rodrigo said.
