Expressions of an artist

by Ranga Chandraratne

Exhibition of paintings by artist Nihal Sangabo Dias at the Auditorium of Alliance Francaise was held recently.

Nihal Sangabo Dias, an artist and sculptor who has spent nearly 20 years in expressing various aspects of the environment, humanity and society in different ways by the medium of art. One of the prominent master pieces of this artist, who is suffering from a hearing impairment, 'The general meeting of Colombo Municipal Council 1906' is a sculpture still on exhibition at the old Town Hall.

Speciality in him is that his reaction towards nature and environment always had to be expressed on a piece of paper in the form of a sketch, or with clay as a sculpture, which he later develops into a great art.

He is also among the artists who have campaigned against war by using his media since 1995. He has made an attempt to exhibit some of the efforts he made on canvas to express his thoughts on war in almost all the exhibitions he held.

He managed to hold his first one man exhibition in June 1995 at the National Art Gallery. He had the rare opportunity to hold a special exhibition of his work in Sweden while he was representing Sri Lanka as a delegate at the educational workshop for the deaf held in 1987.

He has contributed his valuable time not only as an artist but also for doing research for the Sign Language Research Project at the National Institute of Education, Maharagama. Considering all his experiences, he has proved that disability is not a hindrance to contribute something to the betterment of society if some one really wants to.

British Council, UK together with electronic media sponsor YES Fm will be presenting UK DJ Ross Allen. Be it reggae, techno, R&B, drum and bass, rock or hip hop, he'll dish out a groovy tune for all of you wanting to have fun on the dance floor on the 19th in Kandy and 25th in Hikkaduwa.

For all you teenagers, young adults and the young at heart living in Kandy, we are having the first ever 'house party' for all of you to simply have a good time on the dance floor at the Mahaweli Reach Hotel on Sunday March 19 from 7.30 p. m. onwards.

And for those who want to party under the stars on the beach, get to Mambo's in Hikkaduwa on Saturday March 25 where Ross will rock you from 9.30 p. m. onwards.

Ross Allen grew up in south London and was a soul boy from the off - hanging out in clubs in the 80s and taking up DJ-ing during this time. After university, Ross ventured toward the jazzier end of things and began writing for jazz and world music bible Straight No Chaser.

He also finds the time to host radio shows, write a column for dance music and get nifty behind the decks on a regular basis. He has residencies at London's Sunday Best, the Notting Hill Arts Club etc. He also hosted the London Jazz Festival last year.

Back in 1997 he was offered a slot on independent London radio station GLR (now BBC London Live) where his thrice weekly show 'Destination In' won a Sony radio award.

He has also released self-compiled/mix albums, such as 'Abstract Funk Theory' back in 2000, and 'Meltdown' the following year. Bands todate Ross has signed and worked with include renowned names like Talvin Singh (who won the Mercury Music prize), The Stereo MCs, Lady Sovereign, Spacek and the Sugababes, whose single 'Freak Like Me' made it to the number one slot.
