Blistering blues

Pix by Dominic Sansoni

It was a blistering night of the blues when Glen Terry and his Friends took the stage on Friday, March 3 to raise funds for charity. The venue was the Barefoot Gallery and despite the rains that came down after the first half hour, the music kept the enthusiasts on their feet dancing till midnight. What a night that was, raindrops and all!

Glen Terry's Friends included three speedy, always - on - the - over drive musicians from France. Trumpeter/vocalist Boney Fields well recognised for his hard driving musicianship, Mike Armoogum a bassist of rare distinction with a powerful fretwork; Enrico Mattioli a drummer who kept the rhythm section in complete control with his perfect timing. Of course there was Glen Terry on guitar and vocals and well loved by Sri Lankans our own musicians, pianist Kumar de Silva whose expertise is now second nature to the man, and Nesan Thiagarajan an exciting percussionist.

Speaking with Boney Fields the next day after the concert he expressed his happiness in being in Sri Lanka - this was his first encounter - but he was not happy about the spicy food! Commenting on their performance, he was happy the musicians collaborated excellently with never a pause. 'Made in Chicago' he was glad he left Chicago. "I started playing professionally when I was seventeen years.

By the time I reached thirty years of age, I was tired of playing the same songs as a sideman, so I decided to break away.France had many talented musicians and my expertise was respected. It took me nearly two years to get the group Bone's Project going. It's a seven piece band with three horns, Mike and Enrico work with me," Boney clues us in.

Boney Fields who has played with many leading lights in the blues scene, plays at festivals and club dates, and on Monday, March 6 was moving straight from the airport to a jam session in Paris. The group has released three CDs so far. 'Hard Work', 'Red Roof', 'We Play the Blues'. The third CD is getting the final finishing touches before official release.

Mike Armoogum an excellent bassist has his roots in India, was living in Mauritius with his parents, and started playing when he was just sixteen years old.

He used to play drums as well and was playing in a pop band before he met Glen Terry. He then switched to the blues, jazz and jazz fusion. On the look out for more opportunities in expressing his music, he met up with Boney Fields and the chips began to fall into place.

The club dates and festivals followed and work became hectic. Now domiciled in France "I'm enjoying myself with my fans around me but certainly not the cold weather. Here in Sri Lanka I love the warm climate and the hospitable people," says the friendly Mike.
