Upul Jayasuriya to vie for BASL Deputy Presidency Senior Attorney Upul Jayasuriya is to contest for the post of Deputy Presidency of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. Jayasuriya, one time Secretary of the BASL for two consecutive years from 1989-1991, when Ranjit Abeysuriya (P.C.) was the President. Jayasuriya who has been at the Bar for the last 30 years was in the Attorney General's Department during the early stage of his career. He along with Desmond Fernando (PC) present President of the BASL were instrumental in inviting Francis Neat (Q.C.) the President of the International Bar Association to visit the Tsunami affected Lawyers offices in the south prior to Fernando took over as the President of the BASL. Their efforts resulted in the obtaining Rs. 5 million for the benefit of lawyers affected by the tsunami. Jayasuriya has been a member of the Bar Council since he joined the Bar. Jayasuriya says he strongly feels that the Bar has to play a pivotal role in the rule of law and the administration of Justice. He is also of the view that the Bar has to be independent and stand firm in not only safeguarding the rights of the Bench and the Bar but also the rights of the members of Public who have always had the trust and the confidence on the role played by the BASL. At the moment there is no indication that Jayasuriya would be contested
at the 1st Bar Council meeting under its new president that is to be held on
the March 25, at 10.30 a.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute where the
800 delegates of the Bar Council, the representative body of the 8,000
member strong BASL would take place. |
