President inaugurates "Maga Neguma" project

by M. P. Muttiah

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will ceremonially inaugurate the second phase of the "Maga Neguma" road development project at Moonplanes in Nuwara Eliya today. 170 projects will be launched islandwide simultaneously.

Estate Infrastructure and Livestock Development Minister C.B. Ratnayake, Road Development Minister T.B. Ekanayake and several others will participate at this function.

The government has allocated 1,800 million rupees for this project aimed at improving rural roads in the country. Each Parliamentarian and Provincial Councillor are allocated 2.5 million rupees. They have earmarked the roads that are to be developed.

Of the 100,000-km road network in the country, 65,000-metre roads are in rural areas. The responsibility of maintaining these roads was in the hands of provincial administrations, but had not been managed due to financial constraints.
