Kuwait gives amnesty for Lankan detainees by Ananda Kannangara The Kuwait Government has agreed to grant a 'special amnesty' to 207 Sri Lankan workers currently detained in the Kuwait prisons. The decision was taken in response to a request by a team of Sri Lankan labour officials, headed by the Chairman, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Jagath Wellawatta during a visit to the Gulf region last week. The Lankan labour team also visited Dubai to inspect welfare facilities of Sri Lankan workers. Speaking to the "Sunday Observer" SLBFE, Chairman Wellawatta said that victimised workers, consisted of 143 males and 64 females and they would be flawn to Sri Lanka before the end of this month. He said the workers were convicted by the Kuwait judiciary for committing robberies, shoplifting, drug trafficking and various other criminal offences. SLBFE, Chairman also said that another batch of 216 Lankan housemaids who faced employment hardships and sexual harassment and later detained in Kuwait safe houses will also be brought to the country within the next two weeks. The Lankan labour officials also held extensive talks with their counterparts in Kuwait on the welfare facilities of Lankans, employed in Kuwait houses, the garment factories and other shopping complexes. female Lankan workers who were in Saudi Arabian jails for allegedly
committing various offences arrived Sri Lanka on Wednesday. |
