Outstation swimmers fancied in Kinross sea swim

The outstation swimmers, mainly from down south, will make every effort to carry away major honours at the 41st annual Open Six-mile Sea-swim of Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club to be held on Sunday March 26 at Wellawatte, starting at 7.30 a.m.

The 40th swim was conducted in 2004. But the 41st swim which was to be held in March 2005 had to be cancelled due to heavy damages suffered by the club as a result of the December 2004 tsunami.

Victor Peiris, the Chairman Organising Committee said that the usual course of the swim is from Wellawatta to Mount Lavinia and back. The duration of the race is 4 1/2 hours and only swimmers, both male and female who are over 16 years of age on the day of the swim and who are registered with the national controlling body SLASU are eligible to participate.

The swimmers from Sri Devananda College, Ambalangoda, P. de S. Kularatne MV, Dolphin AC, Dharmasoka College, Panadura AC, Sea Lions SC, Fishtail AC, Peterite Swimming Club, Rainbow AC, St. Joseph's College, Royal, S. Thomas' College, RCUACU, Kinross, Otter AC, Navy, Army, Police, Air Force, Musaeus, St. Bridget's Convent, Asian International School, Elisabeth Moir School are expected to participate.

Entries close today, March 19 with General Secretary, Kinross Swimming and Life Saving Club, 18, Station Avenue, Colombo 6.

At the 40th meet, Panadura AC performed the best winning both the men's and women's team championships. Pradeep Lahiru and Thakshila Daluwatte won the men's and women's races respectively with confortable ease. Trophies on offer are; Men's champion - M. G. Sirimanne Memorial Challenge Trophy.

Women's Champions-John Roche Challenge Trophy. Men's Team Champions - Turab A. Jafferjee Challenge Trophy, Women's team Champions-Guy Thiedeman Challenge Trophy, Youngest Boys swimmer - Maharaja Challenge Trophy, Youngest Girls Swimmer-President Challenge Trophy, Oldest Swimmer-Tissa Ariyaratne Challenge Trophy and First Kinross Swimmer to finish the race with the time - Dama Perera Challenge Trophy.
