My Fair Lady

The students of Samudra Devi Balika, Nugegoda participated in the Provincial Drama Competition 2005, senior section, held at St. Paul's School, Milagiriya on March 19 with 'My Fair Lady'.

The cast of seventeen under the superb direction of Nayana Priyadarshini Phigera and the unfailing help rendered by their principal, Mrs. W. S. Ranasinghe enacted both Scenes I and II at the competition.

Their journey to this level of competition began when the eleventh graders of Samudra Devi decided to "do a play" for their annual English Day celebrations last August. Their English Literature teacher, Phigera came up with the idea of bringing to their school stage the classic, written by Alan J. Lerner.

With the help of their teacher, the students put together a wonderful performance. The praise that inundated them from all corners inspired them to present the play first at the zonal level drama competition and having gotten through quite easily at the provincial level competition where they represented the zone of Sri Jayawardanapura.

Speaking to Rangika Lakshini Kuruppu who is also shown on the back page, she played the main role of ELiza Doolittle (originally played by Audrey Hepburn) she said, "We are confident of either the first or second place." She further added that the good reviews of them so far have been due to the teamwork of all those both on stage and backstage.
