Sita Kulatunga: Life and Times of a literati

Continued from last week...

by Ranga Chandrarathne

(This article is written in response to a number of inquiries, especially from G.C.E. Advanced Level students and the students who follow National Diploma in English about the work and life of Ms. Sita Kulatunga).

Her Contribution to education as a teacher

Her illustrious career as a teacher of English commenced at Sri Sumangala Boys' College Panadura and which took him to Nigeria where she was in charge of a Department of English at a school. During the course of her teaching career, she felt the need that there are very little English text book, specially books on English Grammar, in Sri Lanka which cater to specific needs of a generation who learnt English as a second language and are ill at ease in writing and speaking in public.

Most of them could hardly express themselves in English, the fact that hamper the higher educational prospects of otherwise very bright students. She wrote, among other publications, "Sinhala Apata Ingreesi" and "English for Us".

In a review to the Daily News, Prof. Siromi Fernando states, "Sri Lanka today face a world in which English is essential for many practical exchanges of public life and employment. Employed adults and schoolchildren need urgent answers to their requirements for relevant instruction in English.

Sita Kulatunga's "English for Us" is, as the title suggests, an answer to specific needs. As the attractive cover with its mix of English and Sinhala lettering symbolizes, it approaches these needs from homeground of the Sinhalese learners.

Open the text, and English grammar is elucidated in simple, elegant Sinhalese. This is primarily a text of explanation, and therefore a valuable handbook for variety of learners and teachers. The rule of grammar is elucidated in simple and elegant Sinhala.

This is primarily text of explanation, and therefore a valuable handbook for a variety learners and teachers. The rules of grammar, pronunciation and intonation, letter writing and idiomatic usage are clearly and accurately set out.

With the insight of experienced teacher, the writer anticipates possible problem and errors of Sinhala learners, and frequently comments in her explanations not only on what is, but also what is not in English".
