Civil society hails Govt. victory

by Jayantha Sri Nissanka

Local intelligentsia yesterday described the local polls result as a victory for Mahinda Rajapakse's leadership and his pragmatic approach to resolve issues in the country.

They advised that certain political parties need to 'refurbish' their policies on critical issues in the country without taking hardline attitude purely for political gain. Senior Lecturer of the Colombo University Rohan Edirisinghe said that it was certainly a victory for President Mahinda Rajapakse and the UPFA.

This election result has given him strength to act independently without depending on the policies of others', he assured. 'This mandate has strengthened his hand to bring a permanent solution to the North and East problem', he added.

Dr. Bertram Bastianpillai said that the people have shown confidence in the administration of President Rajapakse and his 'Mahinda Chinthanaya'.

The UNP has again failed to gain confidence of the people, Bastianpillai noted.

Prof. S. T. Hettige of the University of Colombo described the UPFA victory as an outcome of the Government's pragmatic approach towards peace, economic, trade and other issues. The UNP defeat shows that it has lost the rural base, he pointed out.

Prof. Kuburugamuwe Vajira Thera said that the people have endorsed the President's effort to rebuild the nation. "People have also shown the strength and confidence on the JVP and JHU in Sri Lankan politics", he added.

Prof.Chandrasiri Palliyaguru of the Kelaniya University said that the election result re-established people's support to President Rajapakse to address the country's grave problems. 'However, the low voter turn out indicated that the people seem to be losing interest in politics, he opined.
