Talking Point "Are the genteel days of club life a thing of the past." The annual general meeting of the club that was reported on last week took place on the 29th March. On a point of order raised that the committee was not properly constituted as per the rules, the chair occupied by the incumbent president was powerless to rule. The chair merely in a perfunctory manner stated let the house comprising the general membership decide, where in point of fact no ruling was made once more on another question raised regarding capital expenditure sought and capital expenditure in point of fact expended it was the same parsimonious buck passing that took place with no satisfactory plausible explanation offered. Two learned former presidents of the bar association were those who tried valiantly and failed, attempting to impart what decorum, and more importantly what bona fide meant. Sadly the don't care Hurrah Boys went with the flow of "Big or Small" protects and provides for all. One noble man of that club went on, to be editor Sunday Observer and there after lecturer Oxford University namely Jayantha Padmanaba. The other noble man was John Kotelawala who went on to be right honourable prime minister. Our desk has received calls from well meaning club staff, and concerned older generation members thanking us for highlighting the happenings whilst praying that sanity shall prevail over the ones elected to govern and preside over the governance of that club.
