Job opportunities from Nipayum Sri Lanka

by Lalin Fernandopulle

'Nipayum Sri Lanka' program introduced by the Mahinda Chinthanaya' initiated its work with the primary arrangements to build a factory at Kattamberiya, Nikkawehera in Yapahuwa last week. At the first stage, the factory will provide employment opportunities to 380 people in the area and later will expand the factory to 1000 people.

The construction of the factory will be completed within six months.

Minister of Enterprise Development and Infrastructure Promotion Rohitha Bogollagama said President Mahinda Rajapakse has launched the project within 100 days after assuming office. The vision of the President is to develop the industrial sector of the country. Industrial development has been in the back burner for sometime and it is a neglected sector, said Minister.

He said it is time that the policymakers take serious note of the immense potential in the industrial sector to develop the country. The sleeping giant has to be woken and made use of. The Minister said "Industrial boom in countries such as India, Malaysia and Singapore are lessons for Sri Lanka.

A clear vision to carry out projects for development is the need of the hour.

According to the Mahinda Chinthanaya every Divisional Secretary will have a factory. The industrial activity centred around Colombo and Gampaha districts will move to the provinces, he said.

Ambanpola and Mahawa Divisions will have new factories under the Nipayum Sri Lanka Program. We command 3 per cent of the apparel market and by improving the quality of our products the country could perform better in the international market, Minister said.

The need to generate a higher percentage of electricity is growing with the increase in population. Selection of suitable sites to construct more power plants is still to see the light of the day, he said.
