Five athletes for Qatar

by Leslie Fernando

A five member athletic team comprising R. D. U. S. Surendra (Colombo District AA), M. S. M. Safran (Matara DAA), H. A. I. D. Hettiarachchi (SL Army), M. H. N. Prasad Dharmaratne (Kalutara DAA) and R. M. G. C. Ratnayake (Colombo DAA) were selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Qatar International Meet to be held in May in Doha.

The trials to select the 4 x 100 metres men's relay quartet was held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday morning. Altogether 48 athletes competed in the 100 metres and the five athletes' timing was the best. (Surendra 10.4 secs, Safran 10.5 secs, Hettiarachchi 10.5 secs, Dharmaratne 10.7 secs and Ratnayake 10.7 secs.) Dervin Perera, the President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka said that the Qatar meet will be a selection trial in view of the Asian Games to be held in Doha, in December.

The AAS decided only to send a men's relay team and their performances yesterday was very good and should aim at winning a medal.
