"We are different" - Spleen Saint by Rikaza Hassan By the time they were 14, they were all sick and tired of all the lovey dovey popular music that played on television, that blared from their radios. They sought and found music that they connected to, music that "felt right" to them.
They began with Slipknot and progressed to heavier, darker stuff until they found their niche of death metal and stuck on to it. "We are all different," and this music conveyed the anger repressed inside of themselves, the conflicting emotions, the hypocrisy of society that they faced. "There was a force that brought us together," says Dylan and as the five of them flocked together Spleen Saint was born. A young band of only one year of age, they came up with the name because it reflected society. "Spleen Saint stands for the unholy, dark, rotten insides of people that they mask with this outer covering of holiness. Basically Spleen Saint is a slideshow projection of society." The objective of their music is "social criticism." "We want to show the darkness hidden inside of society." Their lyrics, they say are in the "spirit of black metal," while the music they compose falls into "melodic death metal." Composition is always a tricky business and Spleen Saint begin with a melody from Chrishaa, lead and rhythm guitar riffs by Malith, Dylan comes up with the solos and finally the drums. Previously composed lyrics are then fitted into their instrumental. Spleen Saint have completed recording their first single, Rise Again which will be released before the end of April. "Rise Again is about a dead person who was terrible when alive and is now stuck in his grave, not accepted to hell or heaven and is pleading for redemption. With Rise Again we are trying to explain to society where they've gone wrong through fiction." They hope to release a video for the single and are also in the process of working on their EP, which they hope to have ready to go by July. They are influenced by horror movies, their own traumatic childhood experiences and the backlash they are subjected to from the public. "People laugh at us and consider us thugs because of the way we dress and the music we listen to." Their musical gods are Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth, Iron Maiden and Metallica. Their goal as a band is to break into the international market someday. "We believe in ourselves. We have faith in our music. We know we can do it." *** Chanditha (18) base guitar According to Chanditha he could get hyper at times as well as bossy. On other occasions he loses the ability to control his anger and this is where music comes in for him. "It helps me get the anger out and I am a cool person for the rest of the day." He gets pissed off by disloyalty, double-crossing and snobbery. **** Malith (18) lead guitar Malith is a guy who never gives up in the middle of a project. He likes playing lead guitar as he considers it a big challenge and considers his guitar to be his girlfriend. He considers himself to be a calm person even though his temper flares on and off. He however does admit to getting very aggressive on stage. "We consider the crowd to be a set of people there to put us down." *** Umeda (26) drums He is quiet just about all the time and is an otherwise ordinary guy. Umeda has been drumming for a decade now and is a professional drummer. The former member of Electric Funeral is also planning to tie the knot with his lovely fiancee soon. Umeda is influenced by Led Zepelin, Deep Purple, Metallica and Iron Maiden. *** Chrishaa (20) keyboards Described as a computer freak, he is an enthusiastic gamer and hacker. He is currently studying computer programming. Chrishaa is also known for his humour and lack of punctuality. **** Dylan (17) rhythm guitar + vocals Dylan is very silent in school except during free periods when he grouches. He believes that one can only count on oneself during troubled times. A formerly sensitive guy, he is now toughened up with thicker skin. He is also a fan of classical music such as that of Beethoven.
