Modelling his passion

by Rikaza Hassan

Ever since adolescence struck him, Danushka Nilaweera wanted to be a professional model. Having studied in Bangalore University, India the 25-year old now works as a management trainee at Pan Asia Bank. His passion for modelling though is yet to leave him.

Instead of waiting for opportunity to come his way, the persevering former Josephian took his passion seriously and began a work out regime at a gym. Last year he deemed himself fit enough to participate in fitness cum fashion competition where he earned a place as one of 14 finalists as well as bagged the place of first runner-up in the 'Mr. Photogenic' mini competition.

"I was nervous at first, but just being in a competition itself gave me a lot of confidence," said Danushka of his experience.

What's so 'big' in being a model? "It does a lot to your personality. It gives you the confidence to face people, interviews as well as earns you a lot of popularity." Even though Danushka has taken part as a model in a fashion show, he says that there isn't much opportunity for an amateur model to turn professional. "There isn't as much opportunity for male models as the female models here."

Danushka also has aspirations of becoming an actor. "Sure, I'd love to be an actor," he says. "It makes you more popular." He adds that he also has had experience in drama while at school.

The ambitious guy describes himself as "fun loving, crazy and out-going." And even though his family isn't too supportive of his desired future line of work, he nevertheless emphasises that to him it is so very important to "just be yourself."
