Swimming pool tragic death: Deceased relatives to go to courts

by Ananda Kannangara

The relatives of the former President of the Institute of Engineers S. H. C. De Silva (76) who was drowned while swimming at the Otters swimming club pool in Colombo last Sunday will demand compensation of Rs. five million from the Otters Club Management for negligence.

Former Coconut Cultivation Board Chairman Lincoln Fernando, a brother-in-law of the deceased told the Sunday Observer that legal action would be taken shortly against the club demanding compensation for its inability to provide a lifeguard at the pool at the time of the tragic incident.

"Even the City Coroner's postmortem report has revealed that the cause of death was due to drowning and not due to any other illness," he said. He said he too was confident that his brother-in-law would have fainted or developed a cramp at the time of the incident.

"Under such circumstances if the services of a lifeguard was provided, his life could have been saved. Therefore we will proceed with legal action," he said.

A child too was drowned in the same pool last year due to the negligence of the lifeguards at Otters.
