CAA to fine errant traders by Lalin Fernandopulle The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has intensified its islandwide network on raids to trap errant traders who make a quick buck by exploiting consumers. Such traders who try to maximise profits taking advantage of the festive season will be penalised, CAA Chairman, Sarath Weerasinghe said. The CAA has arranged to carry out educational and awareness programs at grass-root level to educate the public on proper and prudent marketing methods. It would also introduce a code on business ethics and organise Consumer Associations at every town to work with traders. "This is an uphill task which needs the cooperation of the public. It is the vigilant and duty conscious consumer who could play a vital role in minimising the corrupt practices of traders", he told the Sunday Observer. According to the CAA Chairman there are innumerable complaints from consumers who have been deceived as a result of unreasonable profits made by traders. Most traders do not have a display of the price list. As a result consumers are being taken for a ride, Chairman Weerasinghe said.
