Trinco turbulence: India affirms non-aligned stand on Sri Lanka

by Dushy Ranetunge

The LTTE's actions in Trincomalee seem to be a deliberate plan to destabilise sensitive areas of mixed ethnicity and again playing with the lives of ordinary Tamil citizens, sacrificing them as cannon fodder, to achieve the LTTE's political objectives.

The authorities were able to bring the volatile situation in Trincomalee under control within a few hours, but more incidents were reported on Friday and troops were rushed to Trincomalee's suburbs to quell the unruly situation.

The President's special envoy, Minister Rohitha Bogollagama flew into Trincomalee and paid his sympathies with the victims' families and promised compensation.

In the aftermath of the disturbances reports have been published that the Indian PM, Manmohan Singh telephoned President Rajapaksa deeply concerned by the events in Trincomalee, and a perception created that the Indians had applied pressure on Colombo to restore order in Trincomalee, intervening on behalf of the Tamils.

This report is inaccurate and misleading, as the Prime Minister of India did not telephone the Sri Lankan President. It was the Sri Lankan President who had telephoned the Indian Prime Minister. Both the President's office and reports published in the Indian press confirmed this fact.
