Defending champs Kandy open season on May 27 by Lal Gunesekera Defending champions, Kandy Sports Club, open their quest to retain the Caltex League Rugby Championship for yet another year, when they are billed to take on Navy at Welisara on May 27 in the 'A' 1 category, although the first game of the season which is conducted on a new format, is between Police and Jawatte Lions at Police Park on May 26 in 'A' 2. The six top teams of last year (2005) are in the 'A' 1 League. They are - Kandy Sports Club, CR & FC, CH & FC, Army, Havelocks and Navy), while the sides in the 'A; 2 League are - Police, Air Force, Old Zahirians, Jawatte Lions, Galle RFC and Dim-Dicks. Apart from the Navy vs Kandy game at Welisara on May 27, the other games scheduled for this day are CR & FC vs Army at Longden Place ('A' 1), Galle vs Old Zahirians at Galle ('A' 2) and Dim-Dicks vs Air Force at Radella ('A' 2), while Havelocks take on CH & FC at Havelock Park ('A' 1) on May 28. The first round games that start on May 26 ends on June 25. The second round games are scheduled to start on June 30 and complete on July 15. The first four teams at the end of the first round will play for the Cup, he next four sides (5th to 8th) for the Plate and the balance four outfits (9th to 12th) for the Bowl. The Knock-Out Championshop for the Caltex Clifford Cup is scheduled for
August, the revived Knock-Out Championship for the President's Trophy in
September, while an Inter-Provincial tournament too is likely for end
September and the Asiad in Colombo in November. |
