Carrom Nationals April 22 to May 6 Top 'slicing' is on the cards when the 38th National Carrom Championships conducted by the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka will be held from April 22 to May 6 at the Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Headquarters, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7. The championships is will be a trial to pick 'slicers' for the National Pool in preparation for the 10th SAARC Championships to be staged in Colombo in July. The events to be held are: men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and veteran singles. In the men's singles, Chamil Cooray take top billing while D. Nishantha Fernando is the bottom seed. Nayana Wickremasinghe is top seeded in the women's singles and Amitha Wickremasinghe is bottom ranked. Chamil Cooray and Germain Goonewardena are top seeds in the men's doubles while D. Nishantha Fernando and Ajith Chandrasoma are bottom seeds. The women's doubles placings: Amitha Wickremasinghe/Nayana Wickremasinghe top seed and Leela de Silva/Rohini Mathias bottom seed. In the mixed doubles event, Chamil Cooray/Nayana Wickremasinghe are the top rankers while Langley Mathias/Rohini Mathias are the bottom rankers. Upali Perera is ranked top in the veteran singles and Merril Nanayakkara bottom seed. Nationalised Services CA champions Nationalised Services Carrom Association emerged champions at the inaugural Quadrangular Carrom Tournament worked off at the CFSL Headquarters, Reid Avenue recently. Viraj Fernando, Ajith Chandrasoma, Lalith Kumara, A. R. M. Zakkaf represented the Nationalised Services men's team. They defeated Mercantile Carrom Association 3-2, beat Government Services CA 3-2 and Rest Team 3-0. Rest Team comprising Bradley Mathiasz, Hunaid Hatim, M. A. M. Ashar, M. F. M. Fakir, M. M. M. Miflal finished runners-up. Rest Team beat Mercantile CA 3-2, Government Services CA 3-2 and lost to Nationalised Services CA 2-3. The Rest Team became women's champions at the Quadrangular Tournament while Nationalised Services Carrom Association were runners-up. The Rest Team was represented by Nayana Wickremasinghe, Leela de Silva, Yasika Tahubadde. They beat Nationalised Services CA 2-1, Mercantile CA 3-0, Government Services CA 3-0. Nationalised Services CA team of Amitha Wickremasinghe, Kalyani Amerasinghe, Inoka Nanayakkara defeated Government Services CA 3-0, Mercantile CA 3-0 and lost to Rest Team 1-2. (L.F.) |
