Indonesia train crash kills 14, injures 12 JAKARTA, April 15 (Reuters) - Two trains collided in Indonesia's Central Java province yesterday killing 14 people and injuring 12, police said. The early-morning accident occurred when two trains bound from Jakarta to Surabaya, Indonesia's second city, collided, a police official at Gubug near the crash site said. "According to the latest information, 14 people are killed and 12 are injured," police official Winarno told Reuters. One of the train drivers was among the dead. He said hundreds of passengers had been evacuated from the scene, and the busy line closed to all traffic. One of the locomotives derailed and plunged into a paddy field, the police official said. Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa, who was heading for the scene, said the accident might have been due to "human errors". "Based on temporary findings, there was no order from the train station to let one of the trains go but the train just went away," Radjasa told Elshinta radio. Train crashes and other transport accidents are relatively frequent in Indonesia, where infrastructure has strained to keep pace with population and economic growth. |
