Kobian launches mobility solutions

Kobian Technologies (Kobian), claimed one of the top three computer vendors in Sri Lanka last week launched locally branded mobility solutions based on Intel technology, called the Lapro notebook. The launch of the new mobility solution is part of Intel's initiative to accelerate mobile PC adoption by driving industry-wide standards for notebook ingredients, Kobian's managing director, Kishan Theadore said at the launch.

Intel Mobile Platforms Group, vice president, Mooly Eden who was in Colombo, said that Intel's initiative to help drive the mobile PC industry in Sri Lanka is a reflection of the company's commitment to the country.

Intel adopts a strategy of providing emerging markets such as Sri Lanka with solutions that address their strengths while employing the right technology. By working with Kobian and the rest of the PC ecosystem, Intel has been able to define and develop a solution relevant to the local market, based on Intel technology, he said. ICTAD chairman, Prof V.K. Samaranayake said that Kobian began small 12 years ago and persisted on, promoting reputed brands, while others closed down. The company has 25 branches.

The company has received ISO 9001 certification and is an Intel Premier Provider. It has been closely associated with many other leading brands of computers and accessories.

The mobility launch by Kobian is supported by a broad ecosystem ranging from product design and manufacturing, to distribution and post-sales support.

The platform being launched is based on the registered trademarks of Intel Centrino mobile technology. This provides a lead in performance and graphics and enables improved battery life and smaller forms and factors for laptops, the launch was told.

For the past few years Intel had been working with world-class component suppliers to drive common notebook components, commonly known as CBBs (Common Building Blocks). With these suppliers, Intel has enabled interchangeable notebook ingredients across seven categories hard disk drive, optical drive, LCD panel, battery pack, customisable notebook panel, power adopters and keyboards, Eden said.

Kobian becomes the first company to provide these CBB-based notebooks. The company's initiative promotes broader end-user adoption and opens opportunities for reseller channel community in the country, Theadore said.
