Employees' skills tapped for electricity posts

The skills of the 45 employees at the Bangadeniya flat tile factory will be exploited to make electricity posts for the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). These special concrete posts which can be detached are used in the hill country, said the Chairman of Ceramics Corporation Ranjith Nawaratne.

At present the Bangadeniya factory is not functioning and therefore we decided to use the skills of the employees to manufacture other items.

We are planning to manufacture cement blocks which is in high demand and also terra cotta floor tiles for an order we have secured from Kuwait, Nawaratne said.

The clay tile factories owned by the Ceramics Corporation at Mahiyanganaya, We-uda, Eragama, Alayapattuwa, Bingiriya, Uswewa and Yatiyana have increased production and sales while reducing the loss.

In 2005 the tile factories produced 55 million tiles while it increased to 86 million in the first few months of this year
