EDEX 2007 website launched

The annual EDEX-2007 exhibition conducted by Royal College, Colombo will be held at the BMICH from January 19 to 21, 2007.

The objective of holding the three-day exhibition is to guide Sri Lankan youth who are pursuing higher studies and also seeking employment opportunities.

'Empowering the Sri Lankan youth to be globally competitive' is the theme of the exhibition. A data base www.edex.lk was opened to obtain further details of the exhibition, while job seekers were given an opportunity to log on to http://careers.edex.lk and file their personal details for suitable employment.

Addressing the media, Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekara thanked the Royal College Union (RCU) for extending its commitment towards the youth community in the country by helping them to further their educational activities as well as to have employment opportunities in Sri Lanka and overseas.

"This worthy cause could be considered as a social responsibility commitment by RCU for the country," he said. Project Chairman Kamal Abeysinghe said that at least 150,000 youth enter the job market annually and most of them do not have employable skills.

"According to statistics although a large number of youth, under the age of 25 are unemployed, thousands of job opportunities still remain vacant due to lack of skilled and competent applicants," he said.

He said the objective of the RCU is to overcome this situation and help the youth by conducting free seminars and workshops to improve their higher education, vocational and technical skills development and career profiling.

"Over 400,000 students who seek assistance in higher education, training and employment every year are very poorly informed of available vacancies and skills in demand," he said.

He said the vision of 'EDEX' was to educate students who are unaware as to what should be their next step when they leave the formal school education system or fail to gain admission to a local university.

It is reported that representatives from educational institutions in Singapore, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, Russia, Japan, India, Malaysia and several other countries will participate in the exhibition.

EDEX, Project Treasurer Mahesh Nanayakkara said the EDEX 2007 exhibition will also be held at the Queens Hotel, Kandy on January 23 and 24, 2007. RCU, Secretary R. Udayakumara also spoke.
