A special National Identity Cards (NICs) distribution program for the benefit of students, sitting for the GCE (O/L) examination next month was initiated by the Department for Registration of Persons (DRP).

The decision was taken following a statement made by the Department of Examinations recently that NICs are compulsory for private candidates sitting for the examination next month.

According to the program, all applications forwarded by students at the DRP Head Office at Keppettipola Mawatha, Colombo 5 will be processed within three days.

"This special service is applicable only for students, sitting for the GCE (O/L) examination next month. DRP, Commissioner, A.G. Dharmadasa told the Sunday observer. The Commissioner also requested students as well as school authorities to hand over their applications at the Head Office at Keppettipola Mawatha office and not to send them by post to avoid delay.

He said public school applicants could send their applications along with the signatures of the school principals.

The Commissioner said that special arrangements have been made to collect applications from school children in Northern and Eastern districts through the respective Government agents.
