Gayathrie to perform at Fashion Designer contest

Just ten days more for the finals of this contest which will be held at the BMICH on Thursday November 30. The versatile fashion designer Chula Nanayakkara Ariyaratne is putting the finishing touches to the contest, which has turned out to be competitively exciting.

Who will carry off the most coveted award? The answer will be known on November 30. A special performance by Gayathrie Patrick - mezzo soprano, accompanied by William Patrick-piano will be the highlight of the evening's entertainment.

Latin American dances by Chandana Wickramasinghe's troupe will add glamour to the event. The media sponsors are Sunday Observer and Daily News and the event is sponsored by the Singer Fashion Academy with DHL as co-sponsors. Top Sri Lankan models will represent the designers. Tickets are available at Singer Mega Showrooms and at Salon Ramzi's 65/7 A, D.S. Senanayake Mawatha, Colombo 8.


Lankan Food Festival in Japan

The Galadari Hotel participated in the Sri Lanka Festival held in Tokyo recently. The Festival comprised 'Sri Lanka' Gala Dinners, Cultural Shows, Ceylon Tea Queen Contest and a Sri Lanka Buffet Lunch which was held at the Shinjuku Hilton Hotel in Tokyo.

The festival was organised by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Japan, Foreign Ministry of Sri Lanka, Sri Lankan Airlines, Sri Lanka Tea Board, LK Holidays (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Lanka Business Council in Japan and the Galadari Hotel Colombo. Seen in the picture is Chef Anushan Perera from Galadari Hotel who prepared the Sri Lankan food.


Remembering Rukmani Devi

To mark the 28th death anniversary of Rukmani Devi, a musical show of songs and dances of the late actress was organised by the veteran singer Sriyani Dissanayake and held at the Tower Hall Theatre, Colombo.

The Chief Guest was Kingsly T. Wickremaratne and the guest of honour was the filmstar Ravindra Randeniya. It was a star studded show with Isaq Beg, W. D. Ariyasinghe, Suneith Walpola, Sabeetha Perera, Meena Kumari, Damitha Abeyratne, Indika Upamali, Jeewani and Nirupa Kumari. The presenters were Indrajith Liyanage, Ranjith Edirisinghe and Ajantha Ranasinghe.

In the picture Kingsly T. Wickremaratne is seen lighting the traditional oil lamp with Sriyani Dissanayake and other well wishers.


Be the DJ of the year



Chamila Perera

Good news for all DJs. You have the opportunity to grab the spotlight and be the Denon DJ of the year.

Chamila Perera the son of Chanaka and Lankika Perera of Golden Chimes fame and manager of Cool Jays is hosting Sri Lanka's first all-island DJ contest. This grand event will be on Saturday, November 25 at the Hotel Taj Samudra and is expected to draw hundreds of entries from talented DJs across the country.

The contest is open to all DJs. A preliminary selection round will be held at Clancy's on Wednesday, November 22 to pick the DJs who will participate in the final round on November 25. Three of the judges in the panel are internationally renowned DJs. They are Ronnie Jacks from Dubai, DJ Solo from UK and Mass Ramli who was voted Dubai's Denon DJ of the Year in 2004 and again 2006.

The fourth judge is Roland Lim senior manager at D & M Electronics Singapore. His company is co-producing the event with Cool Jays says the enthusiastic Chamila, a successful DJ who is himself looking forward to the event.

The prizes are fabulous from the DJs' point of view. Imagine for the first prize you can walk away with two Denon DN-S 3500 single CD consoles, the second prize is a Denon DN-D 6000 dual CD console while the third prize is a Denon DN-D 4500 dual CD console.

All competing DJs will have the opportunity of performing on Denon equipment supplied by Cool Jays, and will be given a 15-minute slot in which to spin their music, a minimum of five tunes. Don't be late in sending your applications.

Call over at Cool Jays by tomorrow the latest. In the meantime polish up your mixing and track selection, speech and audience interaction, attire and general presentation which will be the criteria for the judging. Good luck.
