Central Bank sportsman Kamal retires
SPORTSMAN RETIRES: Kamal de Silva, the veteran Central Bank
sportsman, who reaches the retiring age of 60 today, bids adieu to this
prestigious institution after having served it, as a devoted loyal
officer for 39 years and making as well a valid contribution for the
furtherance and promotion of sports within the Bank.
Kamal had his entire secondary education at St. Thomas' College,
Matara, where he excelled in soccer, cricket and athletics with a
fondness for cadetting too. It's his pride and boasts that in the
inaugural Southern Province Schools Soccer Tournament held in 1966, the
team from St. Thomas' Matara of which he was vice-captain, emerged
champions and were awarded the coveted 'Dr. Kularatne Trophy'.
His love for sports continued in the University of Ceylon, Peradeniya,
where he was a member of the soccer and athletic teams and did win
University colours for soccer.
Being recruited to the Central Bank in 1968, Kamal was a member of
the Central Bank Recreation Club right up to the time of retirement, to
be its oldest member. He was associated with Bank's cricket, athletics
and soccer teams and was a member of the soccer team. which emerged
champions in the "B" division soccer tournament in 1970 under the
captaincy of the late Vincent Fernando (Sri Lanka soccer captain) and
also played cricket at the Departmental level under Indrajith
Coomaraswamy.
Kamal now retires as a Senior Assistant Controller of Exchange,
Central Bank.
