Legendary Sri Lankan film director Dr. Lester James Peries was honoured with a special Presidential Award by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday. Dr. Peries was bestowed with the special award for his contribution to the Sinhala Cinema for the past fifty years.

An all night pirith chanting ceremony was held yesterday under the patronage of Ven Kirinde Pemasiri Thera of the Sambudhdhaloka Viharaya to mark the 121 birth anniversary of D. R. Wijewardene, the founder of the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd( ANCL). Lake House management with the collaboration of the Buddhist Association has organised a series of meritorious activities today and tomorrow to commemorate the birth anniversary of the founder.

Karunanidhi gets tough with politicos having LTTE links

Hot on the heels of the detection of an explosive-laden LTTE boat off India's Southern coast, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said last week that his State would not interfere in matters concerning the Sri Lankan Tamils if it threatened the security of India. He said stern legal action will be taken against Tamil Nadu politicos who have links with the LTTE.

Lanka loses Rs. 1 billion due to drop in fruit and vegetable exports

Exports of fruits and vegetables from Sri Lanka have dropped by 30% resulting in a revenue loss of one billion rupees to the country while vegetable prices have skyrocketed during the last one year in the domestic market too.
