Co-ordinators told: complain to police stations

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka has directed regional co-ordinators in Vavuniya and Kalmunai to make complaints to the police stations regarding death threats that they had received recently.

The HRC had called for a comprensive report from the Army Commander in connection with a report published in an English daily on May 18, 2007. The Commission comprised, Chairman Justice S. Anandacoomaraswamy, Commissioners Justice Jayawickrema, Mahanama Tillakeratne, M. T. M. Bafiq and Ms. Nalini Abeywardena, said that there was a discrepancy in the number of youths who had surrendered to the HRC and the figures quoted by the Army in the press report .

Regarding the death threats to the Regional co-ordinator, Vavuniya, the Commission has decided to send a letter by the Acting Regional Co-ordinator in connection with the incident.

In connection with the Communique sent by the German Embassy, the HRC Board decided to inform the regional co-ordinator that he should report the matter to the Fraud Investigation Bureau.
