Ratnayake MMV athletes steal the limelight

ATHLE TICS: A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala athletes gave yet another fine performances to win three more events on the penultimate day of the three day Relay Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. They also set a new record in the 4x100 metres girls relay.

Athletes from Walala who set up six new meet records on Friday won the Girls under-20, 4x100 metres relay with a record time of 50.96 secs. The relay quartet P. G. L. S. Bandara, P. B. W. Indamathi, T. G. Chamali and P. G. P. Menike was responsible for the new mark. The other relays they won were Under-18 Girls Medley Relay 4.6.21 secs, Under-20 Girls Medley Relay 4.9.91 secs.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Army also fared well winning Open Women's 4x800 metres relay 9.9.82 secs, Open Men 4x800 metres relay 7.49.79 secs and Open Men 4x100 metres relay 41.88 secs.

In the Heptathlon Championship R. H. Amali Nisansala of Senanayake MMV, Madampe put up a good effort to become champion collecting 3187 points. Amali on her to achieve success was placed first in the 100 metres hurdles 17.34 secs and 800 metres 2.29.37 secs. She was placed second in the high jump 1.32 metres and 200 metres 27.75 secs, took third positions in the shot putt 5.64 metres javelin throw 16.03 metres and came in fifth in the long jump 4.39 metres. H. Disala Weerasekera of Ferguson High School, Ratnapura finished second with 2749 points and Y. G. T. Mayushika Dassanayaka of Mary Immaculate Convent third with 2645 points.

Nuwan Wasana Bandara of Ambagamuwa MV was in front in the Decathlon Championships on completion of four events. Bandara has already obtained 2213 points. He won the 100 metres and high jump and placed third in long jump and shot putt. Lakshan Bathugedera of Seevali MV and Gayan Prasad Thilakaratne also of Seevali MV is in second and third positions in the Decathlon Championships. The meet will be continued today commencing at 8.30 a.m. The Meet is sponsored by Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd.
