Gruelling power contest in Afghan quagmire

It was the Gulf and South West Asia which the US was seeking to secure as a sphere of influence in 1979 when the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan occurred and this aim remains unchanged to date although the US has drastically changed roles with its former Cold War foe in Afghanistan.
