Colombo Rowing Club retain title for fifth successive year

ROWING - Colombo Rowing Club rowers rowed with great endurance, Power and strength to win the overall title with 28 points to Madras Boat Club 14 at the 70th edition of the Madras-Colombo Regatta held on the Beira Waters yesterday.

The Colombo Rowing Club carried away the Deepam Challenge Cup for the fifth successive year. They won the title in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.

The reigning champions Colombo Rowing Club won the Men's 'B' Scull, Men's 'B' Pair, Men's 'B' Four and the Boat Race. Madras Boat Club had 14 points winning the Men's 'A' Pair and Men's 'A' Scull.

The Colombo Rowing Club won the main event 'A' Four (the boat race). The Colombo Rowing Club crew composed of Udesh Hettiarachchi, (B), Mewan Gunawardene (2), Dejan de Soysa (2) and skipper Devaka Seneviratne rowed with superior team work to pull off a thrilling win over Madras Boat Club crew of Rahul Baliga, Tushar Bansal James Joseph and Rohit Ravindra. Colombo Rowing Club 'clocked' 3.14 secs.

Colombo Rowing Club won the Masters Four defeating Madras Boat Club with a time of 3.24 secs.

Madras Boat Club swept the board by winning the Ladies Scull, Ladies Pair and Ladies Four and they were awarded the Adyar Cup.

Men's Double Scull was won by Colombo Rowing Club and the Women's Double Scull won by Madras Boat Club. No points are awarded for these two events and the Masters Four.

The 42 points aggregate are for Men's 'B' Scull, Men's 'B' Pair, Men's 'B' Four, Men's 'A' Four, Men's 'A' Pair and Men's 'A' Scull.

Masters Four: Colombo Rowing Club beat Madras Boat Club (time 3.40 secs)

Men's Double Scull: Anushan Selvaraja (B) and Baasim Hassan (S) of Colombo Rowing Club beat Sathiesh Kumar (B) and Sriram Raja (S) of Madras Boat Club (time 3.54 secs)

Womens Double Scull: Sneha (B) and Gowri (S) of Madras Boat Club beat Dhanushi (B) and Dimitri (S) of Colombo Rowing Club (time 4.38 secs)

Ladies Scull: Shruti of Madras Boat Club beat Dimitri of Colombo Rowing Club (time 4.36 secs)

Men's 'A' Scull: Rahul Baliga of Madras Boat Club beat Udesh Hettiarachchi of Colombo Rowing Club (time 3.52 secs)

Men's 'A' Pair: Tushar Bansl (Bow) and Rohit Ravindra (Stroke) of Madras Boat Club beat Dejan de Zoysa (Bow) and Devaka Seneviratne (Stroke) of Colombo Rowing Club (time 3.50 secs)

Men's 'B' Scull: Baasim Hassan of Colombo Rowing Club beat Rakesh Mohanarangan of Madras Boat Club (time 4.18 secs)
