SLMBC awards to recognize economic growth

The third annual Sri Lanka Malaysia business awards ceremony organised by the Sri Lanka Malaysia Business Counsel (SLMBC) of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will be held on September 21, this year.

The event which recognises the members who made a valuable contribution towards the growth of Sri Lanka's economy generates much enthusiasm among SLMBC members.

The awards will be presented to the winner, first runner-up and the second runner-up in the six categories namely Manufacturers and exporters, Hospitality and Hospitality related travel, IT and other business related services, importer, Distributor and Retailer, Transport, Infrastructure projects and services.

SLMBC - organising committee member of the third annual awards, Tilak Gunawardana said that the council invites all its members to participate in the competition.

"The annual awards is an event that follows the Annual General Meeting. The awards night is not only a culmination of celebrations but also sets the platform to draw in new members as most of them attend the AGM and interact with others, he said.

The past president SLMBC Keith Perera said that the members need to participate for the success of the business award.

The country is in a very crucial state and one of our objectives is to encourage and reward the businesses which has helped to boost the economy of the country, he said.

Malaysia is the largest investor in Sri Lanka and 15 projects employing 2,757 are in operation.

Exports from Sri Lanka to Malaysia increased from Rs. 1,267 million in 2005 to Rs. 2,562 million in 2006, recording an increase of 102 per cent. Imports too recorded a 35 per cent increase from Rs. 33,429 million to Rs. 44,992 million.
