Best possible side must be picked - SLRFU
By Lal Gunesekera
RUGBY: The job of selectors is to pick the best possible team
to represent the country. Take the example of what happened to former
Sri Lanka cricket captain Marvan Atapattu.
He was dropped by the selectors, but Minister Gamini Lokuge, wanted
him included and now he is to tour Australia very soon. A spokesman for
the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) speaking to the Sunday
Observer regarding the controversy of five players going to France to
witness the Rugby World Cup final, said that if the players were
released by the SLRFU, the selectors should not take hasty decisions.
He further said that there is a possibility of the Kandy Sports Club
players who are in the national pool boycotting the final 23-member side
for the Singer Asiad to be staged in Colombo early next month if the
five players are dropped by the selectors.
The SLRFU spokesman further said that its Secretary Fazal Mohamed,
had sent letters as well as E-Mails to the selectors about the five
players visiting France. The SLRFU had also two meetings with the
selectors, who were kept informed about the matter.
He went on to say that the SLRFU Council decided to send the five
players to France and also had the approval of the team management which
includes the manager (S. W. Chang), Coach (Rob Yule the New Zealander),
assistant coach (Tavita Tulagaese) as well as the two trainers.
"We must field the best possible side for the Singer Asiad, while the
team sponsors too will not be happy with a depleted national side", said
the SLRFU spokesman. |
