HSBC along with the Association For Lighting A Candle (AFLAC)
International launched the 'Undergraduate Scholarship Program' to
support university students of low income families to continue their
education.
The program aims at providing financial assistance to 100 students by
the end of this year. Scholarships were granted to 25 students under the
first batch.
CEO, HSBC, David Griffiths said the bank supports the program to
encourage students with financial difficulties to continue their
education. "Although there is a free education system in the country and
students are keen to study they are restricted from pursuing higher
education due to financial constraints.
The scholarship program will help students to complete their studies
and find suitable employment in the corporate sector", he said.
The four-year program is sponsored by HSBC with a grant of Rs. 6.7
million. The program will support each student with Rs. 1,400 per
month.Students from various faculties will be selected through a
screening process conducted by AFLAC in March.
Founder President AFLAC, Capt. Elmo Jayawardena said AFLAC's
partnership with HSBC will not only help students to reach their
academic goals but also be professionals in various fields.
HSBC partnered with AFLAC to rebuild houses for tsunami affected
families in Panadura and a school in Matara.
