Cheaper coconuts at CDA outlets
By Ananda Kannangara
The Coconut Development Authority (CDA) has distributed over 800,000
fresh coconuts at concessionary rates among consumers in Colombo and the
suburbs during the past few weeks.
The CDA is currently conducting the program in the city limits and
outstations with the help of the Fresh Coconut Exporters' Association.
At present a coconut is sold between Rs. 26 and Rs. 28 at CDA outlets.
CDA, Chairman, D.J.U. Purasinghe told the Sunday Observer that the
objective of launching such a program was to provide relief to consumers
since there is a severe shortage of fresh coconuts in the country.
He also said the CDA is expected to expand the distribution system in
collaboration with the National Livestock Development Board, the Coconut
Cultivation Board and several private sector coconut growers
associations, including the Chilaw plantations. |
